Finding the Right Cat Bed

It would seem simple to buy your cat a bed, but cats being the fussy creatures they are, they can make it difficult sometimes. I’ve had some of my cats totally reject certain styles of beds, while their brother or sister loved it! How do you tell which ones they will like and which ones they won’t? By observing some of their habits. With so many different styles and options of Cat Beds these days, you will be sure to find just the right one, with a few tips.

The first thing to notice is how they sleep. Do they curl up into a ball? Then a circular bed is perfect as it surrounds them in the same circular shape they are sleeping in. They will feel snug and secure. Does your kitty like to stretch out and roll around while he sleeps? A larger bed is the answer, but I also suggest that it has sides to it. Again, it makes them feel secure and also many cats like to rest their chins on the edge. One of the great things about todays beds is that most of them are made of super soft materials. This makes them the ideal place for them to snuggle in.

The beds that also have a half dome shape across the top are great. They are sometimes called igloo beds. It gives them some privacy, but is open enough that they don’t feel trapped. We all know how leery cats are about being confined, so this gives them the feeling that should they need a quick escape, they’ve got it! The cube shaped beds, with an opening or two are very popular with my cats too. I think they feel like no one can see them and they love being “sneaky”. As far as the size of a bed, that depends on the cat, not only how big he is, but if he likes to be snug or wants lots of space. Some of my cats like to sleep in the smaller beds, even if they are rather large themselves.

Heated cat beds are wonderful. They are very therapeutic for cats with arthritis or when they are recovering from surgey or illness. If you live in a cold climate, your cat needs a heated bed just like we need electric blankets. I happen to live in the South, but still use heated cat beds. With the air conditioner blasting away, my cats love their warm beds. I have also noticed that my older cats, that are probably having some arthritis, are much more limber when they climb out of their heated bed.

The last thing to consider is where to put the bed. Again, watch where your cat likes to hang out. I’ve found tucked into a corner, in the kitchen or a bedroom are all good places…wherever they feel most relaxed. Watching your cat will help you decide which bed they will prefer and help you make a wise purchase. Cats sleep approximately 15 hours a day, so we have to make those hours as pleasant as possible. That’s not hard with all the great choices out there. So get them their own perfect bed and give them a kiss goodnight!
